How to Keep Your New Year's Resolutions
Why are the gyms and health clubs packed in January and become ghost towns by March?
Why do people lose their motivation so quickly?
They lose their motivation because the old ‘will-power’ attitude is not enough to sustain motivation while undergoing transformational work. A new attitude is emerging as the future of fitness
- the Holistic Paradigm of Health.
The future of fitness is turning away from the Biomedical Paradigm:
-
Focusing on separate body parts rather than the whole person
-
Fear/risk motivated e.g. fear of getting fat, risk of heart disease
-
External cue where instructor is expert
-
Cultural conformity by striving to match the ideal of beauty
-
End result oriented
Towards the Holistic Paradigm:
-
Systemic movement and integration of the Mind/Body/Spirit/Emotions
-
Pleasure/experiential motivated, e.g. eating and exercising to increase pleasure and quality of life
-
Internal cue where participants listen to the wisdom of the body by paying attention to sensation
-
Ideal of health is determined by the sensations, feelings, thoughts and actions of the participant and his/her appreciation of being unique
-
Process oriented--focusing on the process rather than the goal
Learn how to maximize your desire to be fit and healthy in a series of holistic workshops that will take you from New Years’ resolution to lasting results, simply by shifting focus from sweat and pain to sensation and pleasure. These attitude changing workshops begin January 6, 2007 and continue through February, 2007. They are designed to reinforce, renew, and reframe your desire for health.
Can an exercise program really do all this? Robin Bach, an aerobic instructor since 1981 and now full-time Black Belt Nia Instructor answers, “All I know is that through the power of movement and the principles of Nia, I have learned how to take care of myself.” The holistic workshop series includes:

The workshops are led by Robin Bach, Certified Black Belt Nia Instructor, and holistic personal trainer. The Nia Technique is a fusion of martial arts, dance, yoga, body awareness, and exercise concepts, taught in a group or personalized format. The Nia Technique teaches integration of body/mind/spirit/emotion guided by the Holistic Paradigm. Nia is the future of fitness—how wonderful!
Tracy Stamper, another Black Belt Nia Instructor credits Nia with, “…finally being able to shed extra pounds (forty-five), find a healthy weight for my body and maintain it.” Laura Frankenstein, a physician and Nia White Belt writes, “I have tried lots of other (mind/body) modalities-yoga, tai chi among others-Nia offers a great deal more for me… I know that Nia could be helpful to a variety of people…”
Desire for change, to move away from pain, is the cornerstone for any transformational work, but the cultural attitudes up until now have unwittingly supplied us with painful solutions based on the old Biomedical Paradigm that motivates with fear/risk factors. The shift from the biomedical paradigm of fitness to the Holistic Paradigm of Health is embraced by countless participants who experience a resolution revolution of lasting and powerful change. Mary Ellen Vander Linden, Nia student, exclaims, “At my first Nia class, I was hooked. It was exercise! It was dance (even for those with two-left feet)! It was fun! After 4 years (and 3-5 times a week), Nia is more than that! It is strength! It is freedom! It is meditation! It is friendship!”
